Umbrella Bike Rack
Project Brief and Goals
The goal for this project was to design a functional and aesthetically pleasing public bike rack installation for a specific location in Sydney, Australia. The new bike rack design should solve existing issues with current public bike rack parking while also being specifically designed for a chosen site location.
After conducting some research on existing bike racks in Sydney, problems such as lack of functionality, spatial effectiveness, and uniqueness were discovered. None of the bike parking was specifically designed for their location, but rather copied and pasted all over the city.

Designer Statement
The Umbrella Beach Bike Rack is a simple yet effective design that adds visual appeal to the environment that is located in. The main part of the bike rack is made from bent tubular steel that has two main functionalities for its shape. The first is the wheel well which is designed to secure the rear or front wheel of the bicycle to prevent the bike from falling over and damaging itself or other people's bikes.
The next part of the form is a diagonal shape that extrudes out of the wheel well to allow the user to securely lock their bike using a U Lock and cable lock. Finally, the large umbrella frame is designed to protect the bike from weathering or if seating were to be added would shade the user. The Umbrella Beach Bike Rack is designed to encourage more people to bike to Maroubra Beach through its functionality and spatial effectiveness with its radial design.
